Welland's exterior challenge is inland: sustained humidity along the canal corridor combined with open, unsheltered wind across flatter parts of the city. That combination puts the pressure on your wall assembly details rather than on the cladding itself.

• Canal-corridor humidity. Moisture that gets behind cladding dries slowly, so continuous house wrap and a drainage gap matter more than the brand of siding.
• Freeze-thaw cycling. Repeated freezing and thawing works at caulk joints, fasteners, and any trapped moisture in sheathing.
• Open wind exposure and wind-driven rain. On flat, open lots rain is pushed sideways into window heads and siding laps; correct lapping and flashing direction is what keeps it out.
• House-wrap continuity. Seams taped, wrap lapped shingle-style, and tied into window and door flashing rather than cut around it.
• Expansion and contraction. Vinyl and board and batten need correct fastener gaps so panels can move without buckling in summer or pulling in winter.
• Soffit ventilation. Vented aluminum soffit paired with proper intake keeps moist attic air moving out.
• Eavestrough and downspout placement. Sized to the roof and discharged well away from the foundation, not onto walkways where it can refreeze.
• Brick-to-siding transitions. Flashing at the change of material so water runs out rather than into the wall cavity.
