The five signs, and what each one means

1. Warping, buckling or loose panels. Panels that wave in the sun or rattle in wind are no longer sealed at the laps. Water is tracking behind them. Push on a warped section. If it feels soft, the sheathing underneath is already compromised.
2. Rot, soft spots or fungus. Press a screwdriver into the board near the bottom course and around windows. Anything that gives is rot. On wood and hardboard siding this is the most common Ontario failure, and it rarely stops at the visible area.
3. Heating bills climbing year over year. Siding itself is not insulation, but failed siding lets wind wash the wall cavity and soak the insulation. A 15–25% jump in winter gas usage with no rate change often traces back to the envelope.
4. Bubbling paint or mould on the inside of exterior walls. That is moisture that got through the cladding and the wrap. It is the most urgent sign on this list. The wall assembly is wet.
5. Repainting every 3–5 years. Healthy siding holds paint 8–10 years. If it will not, the substrate is absorbing moisture and no amount of paint fixes that.
